General description

During the Austral spring and summer, the sun lingers each day a little later and the snow and ice from the long austral winter begins to melt.
Wildlife flourishes in abundance: chicks hatch and fledge, whales breach in deep bays and channels where calving glaciers reach the sea, and icebergs, pushed by the tide and currents, strand in shallower areas close to shore. Krill, the base and keystone of the Antarctic food web, reach the surface after a long life migration. The arrival of the krill attracts penguins, seals, and whales in great abundance. During the course of the Austral summer, this desert and hostile continent is converted into a celebration of life. This natural cycle of life ensures that every expedition is different and full of surprises.
